Upgrade of the SafePal Hardware Line: Understanding EAL Certifications

Apr 06,2025

Dear SafePal community,

SafePal is excited to announce the next step in the enhancement of its wallet suite – the upgrading of its SE (security element) chipsets for its full hardware wallet line from CC EAL (Common Criteria Evaluation Assurance level) 5+ to CC EAL 6+.

This upgrade applies to all models in the hardware line, including the airgapped S1 line and the open-source bluetooth X1 hardware wallets. With this upgrade, users can now enjoy better quality components for SafePal hardware wallets at the same affordable prices.

Users looking to explore the full range of SafePal products can do so by visiting the official online store here. To commemorate this milestone, users are able to enjoy a 10% off all SafePal products for a limited time from 6th April 1AM UTC – 9th April 11:59PM UTC with the coupon code “HK25” in the official store.

Note: As SafePal hardware wallets are distributed across 200 regions and countries, there may still be a balance of hardware wallets utilizing EAL 5+ chipsets in the inventory of some warehouses and resellers. More importantly, the quality of these wallets are unaffected, and still provide industry-leading security and cold storage.

What are EAL certification levels?

To better understand the upgrade of the SafePal hardware wallet line, understanding security certification is essential:

Anyone can claim a device to be secure – but with certifications, an independent third party assesses this claim and shows that a product has undergone assessment by a third party to meet a certain standard. This aligns with the transparency, objectivity, and trustlessness advocated by SafePal as a decentralized wallet suite.

While there are different types of certifications; the EAL certification is one of the most established and globally recognized standards. SafePal hardware wallets use Secure Element chips, which are utilized to protect essential data in products such as passports, credit and SIM cards where protection of important data is critical.

For example, the typical EAL level is EAL 4+ or EAL5+ for credit card chipsets, which protects sensitive financial information in payment transactions by ensuring data privacy and protection against physical tampering and fraud. The CC EAL 6+ upgrade elevates the SafePal hardware wallet line beyond traditional financial industry standards.

The SafePal team is humbled to be able to continue providing users with accessible, secure products which empower users to own their crypto adventure, and enjoy a seamless and intuitive experience with self-custody since inception in 2018.
